DESIGNING PATH OF A MASTERPIECE
by Davide Montanaro
It is always hard for me to answer to the question "What does design mean for you?". Since I am working in this field this question floats in the studio’s atmosphere but there is no answer so far that remains valid for long time.
Why? Maybe due to my curiosity and dynamism that lead me through many different sections in the design world.
When I started I conceived a new hooking system for the trekking shoes, my last project in June 2009 was the decoration of a train for a tourism-related event. There is no apparent thread or link connecting these experiences, from the micro to the macro through a sort of magnifier or microscope disguised in my brain.
I would have loved to live in the sixties and have Joe Colombo as schoolmate; I have always been fascinated by the forms and the shapes of that decade, the great expressive freedom allowed by all the new materials and the new markets still to be discovered.

My first steps in the industrial design world started with the hooking system for the trekking shoes, which has been recognized as a very interesting and useful project, being awarded with several recognitions in the design field: I would proudly mention the special award in the XX Edition of Compasso D’Oro in 2003, in the sector Sport and Freetime.
Nowadays new challenges, new trends and new targets are defying us.

The studiodsgn was born specifically to create a new workshop made of skilled, young design professionals able to interact and cooperate with the different manufacturers in the most diversified fields, providing them with their creativity and contribution in all senses. Thanks to its team of designers and co-workers, the studiodsgn develops innovative design proposals satisfying the most demanding companies, with the use of both graphics and mock-ups to give the customer a vast range of tools to evaluate our proposals thoroughly.

We are based in Milan, the core of design and fashion, center of innumerable events which we follow with attentive interest and which we take cue to explore new design paths. Another source of great inspiration comes from our cooperation with the Politecnico where we hold post-degree courses in industrial design.

To preserve the sense of playing along is an interpretive key of our projects at studiodsgn, for example the (p)lay lamp is nothing more than a huge luminescent yo-yo in methacrylate. Very successful though, as there are already some clones and imitations on the market...

Playing out of scale, my last designed object is a modular lamp with led technology, taking cue from a fullerene molecule, named after the famous architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, renowned for having spread the geodesic spheres, featuring the geometry of the same polyhedron.
The values of this project are its modularity, the reduction of packaging cost and the high light efficiency.
